DINOSAUR COPROLITES  - .' Coprolites' are the fossilization of the excrement of organisms and are the most rare of all dinosaur fossils. They belong to a group known as trace fossils which includes dinosaur tracks, regurgitalites (fossilized vomit), and coprolite (fossilized feces) from the lower digestive tract. They provide valuable clues to the diets of extinct creatures. Coprolites are fascinating trace fossils. They come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Some make perfect specimens because of their shape and some we cut into 1/4" thick slabs because of their unique internal colors. DINOSAUR COPROLITES - Brushy Basin provides some good solid agatized nodules of dinosaur coprolites specimens on our 'Coprolite Specimens' page. They come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes and are probably one of the most unique fossils. Agatized dinosaur coprolite make perfect specimens because of their shape and colors. DINOSAUR COPROLITES   - Probably one of the most unusual gemstone is coprolite- who, in his right mind would say that dinosaur fossil dung could actually become a piece of gemstone jewelry? And yet, that is exactly what coprolite is, an agatized gemstone of dinosaur excrement. In most cases on the outside they are rather nondescript brown rocks, but check their cross section and you find beautiful red, yellow and even blue agate. Some we cut into 1/4" thick slabs because of their unique internal range of colors. You can create many beautiful and colorful cabochons for your prized homemade jewelry or just display them. PETRIFIED WOOD - Petrified Wood is formed when water containing  dissolved minerals seeps into the wood and replaces the organic cells with colorful mineral laden agate.  Limb cast fossils are formed when a limb is covered with sediment. The limb decomposes leaving a hollow mold. The mold then fills with dissolved minerals creating an exact cast of the limb, some in bright colored agate. Some  make perfect specimens because of their shape and some petrified wood that has been fossilized in a hard agate or quartz, we cut into1/4" thick slabs because of their unique internal colors. PETRIFIED WOOD - Our Brushy Basin Petrified Wood fossils were formed during the Triassic period and Jurassic period- by the invasion of minerals into cavities between and within cells of natural wood, usually by silica, calcite or like in Brushy Basin rare agate gemstone. Brushy Basin Limb cast fossils are formed when a limb is covered with sediment. The limb decomposes leaving a hollow mold and then fills with dissolved minerals creating an exact cast of the limb in brightly colored agate. Our limb casts comes in various shapes and colors  Agate is a hard gemstone, usually within the range of 7-9 on the MOHS scale. PETRIFIED WOOD - Our fine agate specimens of Petrified Wood Slabs  come in various shapes and colors, most of our slabs are conifers and firs the most abundant trees during the Triassic and Jurassic periods. Petrified wood that has been fossilized in a hard agate or quartz are recognized as fossil ' gemstones '. DINOSAUR BONE - Fossilized dinosaur bones has always been very fascinating for people of all ages. It's found in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Most people don't realize how rare the process is that creates fossilized bone. Most of our specimens of fossilized dinosaur bones  are from the late Jurassic period, 160 million of years old! The deserts of the American southwest (notably Utah) produce many fine specimens. Most fossilized bone, teeth and claws are made of ordinary mineral matter (silica), but some dinosaur fossils are fossilized in very hard, rare, and more exotic gemstone materials like jasper and agate! It's not an easy task to find good agatized dinosaur bone. Fortunately we have a good friend that owns several hundred acres where good bone can be found. DINOSAUR BONE - fossils are usually heavier than the original bone since they are formed entirely of minerals (they're essentially stone that has replaced the original structure cell by cell). Most fossils are made of ordinary rock material, but some are from more exotic gemstone materials such as agate. Most of our Brushy Basin dinosaur bones fossil specimens are fossilized in hard agate. Their interior shows their cell structure which is usually one color and the matrix another color. Since most dinosaur fossils are broken pieces, which resulted from the upheaval of the mountain ranges which brought them to the surface, you can see their colorful fossilized interiors. Mainly, large dinosaurs found in Brushy Basin are sauropod dinosaurs such as the  Diplodocus, Apatosaurus and  Camarasaurus  and the theropods notably Allosaurus. DINOSAUR BONE - has long been used for ornamentation- when polished it shows many colors as well as cell structure. Fossilized dinosaur bones, as a gem is describe as " jasperized" or " agatized" and are popular gemstones used in jewelry. Of all our Brushy Basin fossilized dinosaur bone slabs only about 2% is the very rare jasperized! Most agatized varieties are more common and therefore less expensive. Moss agate dinosaur bone is the exception. Moss agate dinosaur bone is found in very few locations making it rare and more expensive and very desirable for fine jewelry. The most important criterion for determining the price of  'jasper' and 'moss agate' dinosaur bone slabs depends on their cell structure, color and rarity. CABOCHONS -  Cabochons or 'cabs' for short, is a precious or semiprecious gemstone of convex or oval form. The Cabochon cut,  is a method of cutting gem-quality stones with a convex, rounded surface that is polished but unfaceted. The back of a normal cabochon-cut stone is flat, but may be hollowed to lighten the color.Some cabs are laminated, a painstaking process in which several different stones are cut into slabs, then gluing together to create a cab of different gems. Some are calibrated, meaning they are cut to a specific size and shape. DESERT RELICS - ghost town is a town, usually a mining town, that has been completely abandoned, usually because the economic activity that supported it has failed, or due to natural or human-caused disasters such as flood, government action, uncontrolled lawlessness or war. Roads, rail road lines supporting these town were also abandoned. Most of these small mining towns were lost to history and not on modern maps. Yellow Cat RedWood- as it is called by local collectors, occurs as limb casts containing red-banded agate with accents of white, gray, black, yellow, orange, blue, and violet. This very rare and localized gemstone material has been collected for more than seventy years and, because of its beauty, is much sought after by domestic collectors of fossil wood . All 'RedWood' occurs only in the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation and of all Brushy Basin petrified wood, only about 0.5% is the very rare 'RedWood'. Although everyone who collects this fossil wood uses the term "redwood", the name is purely a color description and a colloquialism.

Did you know- Scientists at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, has reported finding DNA in cells of fossilized bones recovered from an underground coal mine.  After two years of painstaking analysis and hundreds of unsuccessful attempts, a scientist at Brigham Young University has extracted the genetic material DNA from what he thinks are bone fragments of 80-million-year-old dinosaurs. The surprise was that the recovered DNA bore little or no resemblance to that of any modern animals.
